The New Normal: Warrantless Tracking of Your Cell Phone

Police departments around the United States routinely track citizens through their cell phones without obtaining a warrant, the American Civil Liberties Union has reported. Phone companies have been regularly compliant by providing their customers' information, including real-time GPS location tracking, even when no probable cause has been provided by the police. While there is demonstrable value in allowing the police to collect the evidence necessary to pursue criminal investigations, the ACLU has brought to light a disturbing trend of police departments routinely accessing individuals' private data - many of whom are not even suspects - without legal oversight.
