The Whigs Tonight at NBT

By Mike Lyons

Athens garage rock trio The Whigs will make their way back to Columbia on Friday to show the city once again how to rock out.  The band will share the stage with South Carolina’s own Leslie and fellow Athens rockers Ponderosa.  And, of course, since a night with this much rock just would not be complete without WARQ (Rock 93.5), the radio station and the New Brookland Tavern join forces to provide the party while the bands provide the rock.

The Whigs are supporting their latest album, In The Dark.  This third release by The Whigs shows a progression from their sound on previous albums. The band attributes some of the changes to the influence of recent tour mates the Kings of Leon. The album continues to explore the band’s standard garage rock sound, but the new influences can clearly be heard in the elements of arena rock that the band incorporates into their sound.

Regardless of any changes in the studio though, the band remains a beast on the stage.  With drums pounding and a wave of guitar and bass blasting the audience, the Whigs rock out in a way that reminds you what rock’n’roll was always supposed to be about.  And adding Charleston rockers Leslie and hometown friends Ponderosa to the bill just goes to show that the band takes pride in their live show and wants to get the night started off right.
Be sure to get your tickets in advance because you don’t want to miss this one.  Advance tickets are $9.35 ($10 with tax), and you can purchase them at the New Brookland Tavern or online at etix.com.  Otherwise, bring $12 to the club Friday. Doors open at 8 p.m., so get there early to enjoy a full evening of rock entertainment.
